The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century. Oil painting on aspen, with advanced painting technique, with blurred contours that give life to the picture.
The model is known for her mysterious smile and gaze. Francis I of France is known to have purchased the painting, making it one of the few works that can actually be attributed to Leonardo da Vinci.
The painting was stolen in 1911 and rediscovered in 1913. It was during this period that the painting became a world-famous icon and inspired many modern artists.
